Finding Hope When You're Feeling Hopeless | Ep. 020
How to Hold Onto Hope When the World Feels Overwhelming
Why personal action still matters in times of uncertainty
There are moments when looking at the state of the world can feel completely overwhelming. Between the headlines, political division, environmental destruction, and the constant feeling that those with the most power continue to make decisions that move us further away from the future we want, it's easy to wonder whether anything we do actually matters. Maybe you've even caught yourself thinking, What's the point?
If you've been feeling that way lately, I want you to know you're not alone. I've felt it too.
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that hope isn't the absence of grief. In fact, they're often deeply connected. If you're feeling discouraged, angry, or heartbroken about what's happening in the world, don't rush to push those feelings away. Emotions aren't problems to solve…they're energy that wants to move through us. The more we resist them, the more they tend to stay lodged in our bodies. But when we allow ourselves to fully experience them, they eventually make space for something else: clarity, peace, and the ability to move forward.
That's why my first piece of advice is simple: let yourself feel it.
Cry if you need to. Grieve if you need to. A caring heart is supposed to break when it witnesses suffering. The goal isn't to avoid those emotions. It's simply not to build a home inside them.
From hopelessness to inspired action
One of the biggest shifts I've experienced has been realizing that I don't need to spend all of my energy trying to convince politicians or billionaires to change. If activism, organizing, or protesting is part of your path, beautiful. Those things absolutely have their place. But if your hope depends entirely on someone else making different choices, you'll probably end up exhausted.
The only person you truly have the power to change is yourself.
Rather than asking how you can solve every problem on Earth, try asking yourself a much smaller question: What is one thing I can do today that aligns with the world I want to live in?
Maybe that means moving your money to a local credit union. Maybe it's reducing your reliance on single-use plastics, supporting local farmers, volunteering in your community, or simply making more intentional choices about where your time, attention, and money go. None of these actions will change the world overnight. But millions of people making values-aligned choices absolutely can.
That's how cultural shifts happen.
Why staying connected to your heart matters
Something I've come to trust is that the rational mind and the heart see the world very differently. The rational mind looks at the past, projects it into the future, and often concludes that things will only get worse. The heart, on the other hand, remembers something our minds often forget: human beings are capable of extraordinary transformation.
History is full of moments that seemed impossible until they happened.
When we stay connected to our hearts, we remember that every movement begins with ordinary people choosing to live differently. We stop asking whether our individual actions are enough and begin recognizing that our actions inspire the people around us in ways we'll probably never fully understand.
Choosing hope every day
Hope isn't pretending everything is okay. It isn't ignoring injustice or looking away from suffering. Hope is choosing to continue showing up anyway. It's deciding that love, compassion, and stewardship are still worth practicing, even when the outcome isn't guaranteed.
So if the world has been feeling especially heavy lately, take a deep breath. Put your hand over your heart. Nourish yourself. Let yourself feel whatever needs to be felt. And then ask yourself one simple question:
What is love asking me to do next?
Start there.
Because New Earth isn't something we're waiting for someone else to build. It's something we create together, one choice, one conversation, and one act of courage at a time.
