When Our Consumer Choices Carry Energy

We’re so practiced at thinking about our consumer choices in practical terms. Does this product meet my needs? Is it convenient? Is the price worth it? But lately, I’ve been thinking about another question: What kind of energy am I inviting into my life when I choose to support a company?

In this episode of New Humans for New Earth, I explore the connection between consumer choices, energetic awareness, and the values behind the companies we support. If everything is energy, then the businesses we give our money to aren’t completely separate from us. When we bring their products and services into our homes, we are also bringing the values and energy of the people and systems behind them into our lives.

Looking Beyond the Branding

I think it’s important to look beyond the story a company tells us through its branding. We all know in this age of white labeling and drop shipping that branding is just words on packaging. You can find the same product carrying dozens of different branding on the marketplace these days. All telling a different story.

Relying on branding won’t tell you anything real about a particular company. So, how are you supposed to make informed consumer choices? Particularly in a moment when we’re all so busy and the internet is jam packed with sources that say one thing and the opposite. Is the solution really more brand research?

Answer: No. The answer is energy.

Practicing Energetic Hygiene

As become more aware of ourselves as energetic beings, intentionally take care of our energy and the energy around us with becomes more important. Practicing energetic hygiene includes noticing how energy transfer happens in our relationships, workplaces, homes, and everyday environments. We’ve all experienced people who leave us feeling depleted and others who leave us feeling energized, hopeful, and inspired.

That same awareness applies to the objects, products, and services we bring into our homes and our lives. What in your home brings you peace and joy? What carries memories or associations that no longer feel good? And, more importantly for this moment, how does the energy of the products and services you are bringing into your home feel to you?

Moving Beyond a Zero-Sum Worldview

At the heart of this conversation is an I keep coming back to: We don’t have to live as though someone else has to lose for us to thrive.

The central idea behind capitalism is that energy is zero-sum. Simply put, capitalism assumes that resources, like energy, are finite. So, if I give you a dollar that means that I do not have that dollar. This is why mega corporations work so hard at extracting as much value out of their workers for as little compensation as possible, and refuse to take actions that care for the planet. To maximize their dollars.

This extractiveness is why the energy behind these mega corporations feels so exploitative. Because it is. But energy doesn’t have to be zero-sum. In fact, there are business leaders and companies who already understand this. Who know that creating quality products, caring for the planet, and supporting one another can actually create more abundance rather than less.

So instead of adding another complicated rule to your shopping list, I want to offer a simple invitation: do a vibe check. Ask yourself: Do I actually want this company’s energy in my home and in my life?

You know the answer. And the impact of ignoring it, besides financially supporting a company you don’t vibe with, means that you’re surrounding yourself with energy that doesn’t serve you. It’s time to opt out.
