The Unexpected Gift of Authentic Rest | Ep. 023
What Does It Really Mean to Rest?
We often think of rest as sleeping in, watching TV, taking a day off, or simply doing less. But what if true rest goes much deeper than that? In this episode of New Humans for New Earth, Queenie and Gabe Torres explore rest as something more profound: the ability to feel safe enough to take off our armor, release our expectations, and simply be ourselves.
Rest, Boundaries, and Honoring Yourself
For people who spend much of their lives holding space for others, rest can be especially difficult. When we are used to helping, supporting, healing, or showing up for everyone around us, it can feel uncomfortable to admit that we have reached our own limits. But as this conversation explores, we cannot continually give from an empty place. Sometimes the most loving thing we can do for ourselves (and for others) is recognize when we need to step back.
Rest can also mean listening to the subtle signals that tell us when something isn't right for us. It might mean saying no, postponing a conversation, taking time alone, or simply allowing ourselves to stop forcing something to happen.
Taking Off the Armor
One of the central ideas in this conversation is the idea of living “unarmored.” So much of daily life can involve protecting ourselves, managing how we're perceived, anticipating other people's reactions, and carrying awareness of everything happening around us. Over time, that constant vigilance can become exhausting.
Taking off the armor means creating spaces where we don't have to perform or protect ourselves. That can look like solitude, being in nature, or reconnecting with a sense of childlike curiosity. It can also mean finding safe people and environments where we can show up exactly as we are.
Finding Rest in Nature, Play, and Presence
This conversation also explores the restorative power of nature: from laying in the grass and feeling connected to the Earth to hugging trees and noticing the energy of plants. Rest doesn't always have to look like doing absolutely nothing. Sometimes it is about doing something that allows us to feel more like ourselves.
Play, laughter, curiosity, and genuine connection can all become forms of rest when they allow us to release the pressure to be someone we're not.
Creating a Softer, Safer World
Perhaps the most beautiful idea in this episode is that becoming more comfortable in our own unarmored selves can affect the people around us. When we allow ourselves to be playful, genuine, and open, we give others permission to do the same.
Maybe rest isn't simply about stopping. Maybe it's about remembering that we are safe enough to be ourselves…and creating more spaces where other people can feel that way, too.
